‘Assigning invented names won’t alter reality’: India’s sharp retort to China on Arunachal Pradesh

New Delhi: In a strong rebuttal to China over its latest move to rename various places in Arunachal Pradesh, the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday said that assigning “invented names” will not alter the reality that the state “is, has been, and will always be” an integral and inalienable part of India.

The Ministry of External Affairs’ response came against the backdrop of China releasing a fourth list of 30 new names of various places in Arunachal Pradesh. In recent weeks, China has increased its assertions to re-emphasise its claim over the Indian state. The first list of six new names of various places in the state was released by China in 2017. The country went on to release the second list of 15 places in 2021, followed by a third list of 11 places in 2023.

China persisted with senseless attempts

“China has persisted with its senseless attempts to rename places in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. We firmly reject such attempts. Assigning invented names will not alter the reality that Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal was quoted as saying in an official statement.

Jaishankar’s strong response to China’s move

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday slammed China for renaming Indian regions and asked if he changes name of someone else’s house, will it become his. “If I change the name of your house today, will it become mine? India’s Arunachal Pradesh was, is, and always will be a state. There is no impact when names are changed,” he said.

Last week, India said that Beijing may “repeat its baseless claims” as many times as it wants but that is not going to change New Delhi’s position that Arunachal Pradesh “was, is and will always remain” an integral and inalienable part of the country.
