Benefitted from simplifying my batting approach, says Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag

New Delhi: After flattering only to deceive in earlier seasons, Rajasthan Royals’ Riyan Parag said he has found a way to adopt a simple approach while batting.

Parag cracked a 39-ball 54 as Rajasthan completed a six-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians on Monday to move to the top of the standings with three straight wins.

Rajasthan won the toss and elected to bowl and restricted Mumbai to 125/9, which they chase down in 15.3 overs.

They had slumped to 48/3 in the seventh over during their chase but Parag’s second successive fifty ensured that they didn’t have any more hiccups as they win with 27 balls to spare.

“Actually, I’ve simplified everything instead of trying to do a lot of things. Earlier when I wasn’t getting runs I would try a lot of different things. This year, it’s just seeing the ball and hitting the ball,” he said after the match.

“When I play domestically this is the exact kind of situations I go into bat. When Jos (Jos Buttler) bhai and Ash (R Ashwin) bhai got out, I thought to myself this is what I do in domestic cricket. So that’s what I calculated.

Asked to point out the difference between domestic cricket and IPL, Parag said that three-four years he couldn’t perform, which forced him to rethink his approach though he believed he can succeed at the highest level.

“I realised I wasn’t practicing at this kind of level so I went and did that,” he said.

Trent Boult (3/22) was awarded the player of the match for his three wickets in the powerplay with two of them — Rohit Sharma and Naman Dhir — coming in the first over itself.

The New Zealand seamer said it’s always nice to get wickets, particularly when in the T20 format when nothing is certain, adding that he was happy to have created early pressure.

Boult also praised “great find” South Africa’s Nandre Burger, his opening spell partner, who bowls with great skill and plays with his “heart on his sleeves”.
