Bengaluru: Amid the ongoing water crisis, now Karnataka is battling soaring temperatures. The mercury breached the 40-degree Celsius mark on Wednesday in several districts of the state. Kalaburagi and Bagalkot recorded maximum temperatures of 40.6°C and 40.2°C, respectively. The summers have started early this year in the state, and the weather experts attribute this early onset of summers to the El Nino effect.

This is for the first time this year that the mercury soared above 40°C, said the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) scientists. The IMD also issued a heatwave alert in six districts of the state for the next three days. The capital city, Bengaluru, is also expected to witness a surge of up to 2°C in maximum temperature.

On the heatwave alert, the IMD scientists said that such an alert is sounded when any station records temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, along with a surge of 4°C above the normal temperature. Senior scientist A Prasad from IMD Bengaluru said, “While the situation is expected to be severe in Maharashtra, North Karnataka districts such as Kalaburagi, Yadgir, and Ballari are set to experience a heatwave and warmer nights over the next three days.”

North Karnataka most affected

North Karnataka districts are witnessing rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, south-interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, is witnessing a surge of up to 2 degrees Celsius above normal in the maximum temperature.

The Climate Shift Index map suggests that Bengaluru and other parts of the state are likely to witness sweltering heat in the coming days. The met officials added that March has witnessed less rainfall than usual till now. The residents of the state are being advised to stay cautious as the mercury continues to rise. The weather department advised them to take all necessary precautions to reduce the impact of the heatwave.
