CERT-In Warns Apple Users in India: Update Your Devices Now

Posted by

India’s cyber security watchdog, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), has issued a critical alert for users of Apple’s iPhones, MacBooks, iPads, and Vision Pro headsets. This warning points to a severe vulnerability that could allow hackers to remotely control these devices.

Understanding the Threat

The vulnerability impacts various Apple products, including older versions of Safari, macOS Ventura, macOS Sonoma, visionOS, as well as iOS and iPadOS. It’s caused by a flaw in the WebRTC and CoreMedia components, which could enable attackers to execute harmful code on affected devices from afar.

Affected devices include:

iPhone XS and later models
Various iPad Pro models, iPad Air, iPad, and iPad mini running on iOS and iPadOS versions older than 17.4.1
MacBook users with macOS Ventura versions older than 13.6.6 and macOS Sonoma versions older than 14.4.1
Apple Vision Pro headsets with visionOS versions older than 1.1.1

Steps for Protection

To protect against potential cyber-attacks through this vulnerability, CERT-In advises the following actions:

Update Devices: Make sure all Apple devices are running on the latest software versions which contain patches for this vulnerability.
Avoid Unsecured Wi-Fi: Do not connect your devices to open or public Wi-Fi networks, as these can be easily exploited by hackers.
Use Two-Factor Authentication: Enabling 2FA can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access to your devices.
Safe Downloads: Always download apps and software from the Apple App Store or other reputable sources to avoid malware.
Back Up Data: Regularly back up important information to external drives or cloud storage to prevent data loss from any cyber attack.

The Importance of This Alert for Indian Users

This security warning is crucial for Apple product users in India, where such devices are prevalent. With the growing dependency on digital devices, the risk of being targeted by cyber attacks increases. This vulnerability underscores the need for users to stay vigilant and proactive in updating their devices and following recommended security practices.

By adhering to the guidance issued by CERT-In, users can safeguard their devices and personal information from potential threats. Updating devices, cautious use of Wi-Fi, enabling extra security measures, downloading from trusted sources, and regular data backups are essential steps in enhancing digital security.
