Krishnanagar: Trinamool Congress supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took a dig at BJP-led NDAs 400 plus seats claim in upcoming Lok Sabha seats and challenged the saffron party to win in 200 constituencies.

Mamata Banerjee addresses rally at Krishnanagar constituency

Addressing a rally at Krishnanagar rally on Sunday, Banerjee asked the people not to apply for the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), as doing the same would turn them into “foreigners”. She also reaffirmed her decision not to allow CAA in her state. Notably, TMC has fielded Mahua Moitra once again from this seat. While she was elected in 2019 too, Moitra was expelled from Lok Sabha for allegedly sharing her login credentials with unknown persons, thereby amounting to unethical conduct.

“The BJP is saying ‘400 paar’, I challenge them to cross the 200-seat benchmark first. In the 2021 West Bengal assembly polls, they aimed for 200 plus seats but had to stop at 77. Some of these 77 have since joined us,” she was quoted as saying by the PTI.

Banerjee accuses BJP of spreading lies on CAA

Banerjee further accused the BJP of spreading lies regarding the CAA. Questioning PM Modi’s guarantee on CAA, she added, “The CAA is a trap to turn legal citizens into foreigners. Once you implement CAA, NRC will follow. We would allow neither CAA nor NRC in West Bengal. Don’t fall for the false assurance of the central government. If you apply, you will be designated as a foreigner for 5 years.”

Notably, the BJP-led Centre notified the CAA on March 13. With this, the Centre will now start granting Indian nationality to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians who are persecuted in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan who reached India before December 31, 2014.
