Excise Policy case: Delhi court directs Tihar Jail to provide Arvind Kejriwal electric kettle, table, chair

New Delhi: A special court on Wednesday directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal an electric kettle in view of his “medical condition” and also a table and a chair for reading books.

Court passed the order on an application moved by Kejriwal’s counsel

Special judge Kaveri Baweja passed the order on an application filed by a lawyer of Kejriwal. claiming that the Delhi Chief Minister required an electric kettle for heating water and for having tea, as the jail authorities provide tea in accordance with the Jail Rules only.

The counsel representing Kejriwal told the court that an application was moved before the court for providing the AAP national convenor a chair and table when the judge had sent Kejriwal to Tihar jail on April 1, however, no directions were issued.

What did the court order?

“Keeping in view the medical condition of the accused (Kejriwal), the request for providing electric kettle is allowed… Having considered the request made that the table and chair is required by the applicant for the purpose of reading the books which have already been permitted, the concerned Jail Superintendent is directed to provide a chair and a table to the accused, in accordance with the Jail Manual,” the court said and also asked the jail superintendent of Tihar Jail to permit the authorised counsel for Kejriwal to provide him a copy of the jail manual.

ED arrested Kejriwal in money laundering case on March 21

Kejriwal, who was arrested in a money laundering case connected with the alleged irregularities in the formulation and implementation of the now-scrapped Delhi Excise Policy on March 21, is currently lodged in judicial custody in Tihar Jail. He was sent to judicial custody on April by the court until April 15 after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) did not seek his remand and urged the court to send the Delhi Chief Minister to judicial custody.

The ED has alleged that Kejriwal was the kingpin of of alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam and was involved in drafting and implementation of the policy for favouring and benefiting liquor businessmen in exchange of kickbacks and eventually using part of proceeds of crime generated out of the scheduled offence in the election campaign for Goa Assembly elections”.
