‘How much Kohli will do alone’: Sunil Gavaskar defends star batter after RCB’s loss against KKR

New Delhi: Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar backed Virat Kohli after his batting efforts ultimately went in vain as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) by seven wickets on Friday. Kohli struck a crucial 83* runs facing 59 deliveries to help RCB post a reputable target of 183 for the visiting side who fared better and ended the home team’s winning streak in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

RCB’s 182/6 was built around Kohli’s 83-run knock as he delighted the RCB fans with four fours and as many sixes but didn’t get any major support from his batting partners. Other than Cameron Green (33 off 21), Glenn Maxwell (28 off 19), and Dinesh Karthik (20 off 8), no batter could score in double digits and Sunil Gavaskar found it problematic. He didn’t shy away from stating the fact and defended Kohli after the match concluded.

“You tell me how much Kohli will do alone – someone should accompany him, If someone had supported him today, he would definitely have scored 120 instead of 83, so this is team sport not a single man game, he didn’t get any support today,” Gavaskar told the host broadcaster.

KKR grab successive wins, continue Chinnaswamy dominance

Kolkata Knight Riders, on the back of their batters easily chased down the 182-run target with 19 balls to spare (186/3). They moved to the second spot in the points table after continuing their Chinnaswamy dominance. KKR have notably not lost a single game since 2015 at RCB’s home ground and also bettered their head-to-head record against the Faf du Plessis-led side.

The opening duo of Phil Salt (30 off 20) and Sunil Narine (47 off 22) delivered a terrific start to their team which was capitalised by Venkatesh Iyer (50 off 30) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (39* off 24). KKR looked totally unfazed going for the target as the RCB bowlers were wayward and clueless and could take just three wickets, that too when the damage was already done.
