IIT Bombay Placements: Concerns mount as 36% of engineering graduates remain unplaced

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay has initiated its campus placement drive for engineering graduates amidst sluggish economic growth. According to a report by the HT, approximately 36 per cent of engineering students have not received employment offers. Sources indicate that out of the total 2,000 aspiring engineers registered for the IIT Bombay placement 2024 drive, 712 are still awaiting campus placements. For the first time, students registered for placements from the computer science and engineering branch have witnessed not achieving full placement.

Concerns are mounting over the Indian job market as a significant percentage of IIT Bombay engineering graduates remain unemployed. Last year, a total of 2,209 candidates registered for the IIT Bombay campus placements, out of which 1,485 managed to secure placements. The institute reported that 32.8 per cent of students were without placements.

IIT Bombay placements raise eyebrows; why

Despite 22 students receiving more than a 1 crore package in phase 1 placements during December-January, the institute cannot evade this mild disapproval. An official told HT “It was a struggle to invite companies to the campus compared to last year due to the global economic meltdown.” According to the official, many companies are hesitant to offer high-pay packages as determined by IIT Bombay. Additionally, the placement cell is reportedly not prioritising job offers obtained by an average student.

IIT Bombay invites companies from various parts of the world for its placement drives held in December-January and February-March.

Every year, approximately 13 lakh candidates appear for the JEE Main entrance exam, out of which only 2.75 lakh will qualify to take the JEE Advanced exam. Admission to IITs will be solely based on the performance in the JEE Advanced exam.
