IPL 2024: KKR’s clash against RR at Eden Gardens on April 17 likely to be rescheduled, here’s why

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering rescheduling the match between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the ongoing IPL 2024 at the Eden Gardens on April 17. The board is considering postponing the game to a later date or relocating it to a different venue owing to concerns regarding security arrangements on the said date.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the game is likely to be rescheduled or relocated due to Rama Navami festivities coinciding with the match. Rama Navami is a festival celebrated nationwide with processions taken out on the streets in many parts of the country. Thus, the authorities are not sure about providing adequate security for an IPL game in Kolkata on the same day.

With the general elections also on at the same time, it will become even more difficult for the local authorities to promise the best possible security arrangements inside and outside the stadium during the game. As per the report, BCCI is thus weighing in the option of postponing the game and is already in touch with the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and the Kolkata Police over the matter.

The BCCI has also kept the two franchises and the broadcaster in the loop in case of a schedule change. The Indian cricket board has been meticulous in planning the schedule of IPL 2024 due to the general elections coinciding with the tournament this time around. The board had the option of moving the entire tournament to the UAE but decided to go ahead with the full competition in India irrespective of the challenges.

BCCI released IPL 2024 schedule in two phases

The BCCI released the entire schedule of IPL 2024 in two phases keeping the general elections in mind. In the first phase, BCCI released the schedule of 21 matches before confirming the schedule of the remaining 53 matches. Chennai is set to host the final of IPL 2024 on May 26.

Despite great attention to little details in the schedule, BCCI now might have to potentially rejig it a bit considering the Rama Navami festivities on April 17. No final decision has been taken on rescheduling or relocating the game but it remains to be seen how BCCI will go ahead with the rejig. “The discussions are on with the police authorities and we will take a decision soon,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

Kolkata Knight Riders are currently sitting in the top spot on the IPL 2024 points table with two wins from their first two matches. They defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in their opening game at home before thrashing RCB in their next game to make it two wins in a row. KKR will take on Delhi Capitals in their next game on April 03.
