New Delhi: Mayank Yadav’s ability generate serious pace at a flat track is a good omen for Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024, says the team’s bowling coach Morne Morkel after their 21-run win over Punjab Kings.

The 21-year-old consistently bowled over 150kph on debut with one delivery clocking 155.8kph, the quickest in the tournament so far.

He dismissed Jonny Bairstow, Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma to derail Punjab in their 200-run chase as LSG notched up their first win after loss in their opening match.

“Young Mayank bowled serious heat and got the wickets. It was tough last year as he got injured after the first warm-up game. We’re managing him better. He ran in and that was the pleasing thing,” said former South Africa pacer Morkel.

“We asked the guys to do the basics well on a good wicket. Told him to stick to his lengths and use bouncers. Proud he ran in and bowled gas despite the humidity. How the wicket would play was an unknown, we had to sum up conditions and use them.”

Yadav was chosen as the man of the match. After the match he said he wasn’t nervous in his first IPL game and tried to do what he was instructed to do.

He said his wanted not to put too much pressure on himself and focussed on bowling at the stumps and use the pace as much as possible.

The right armer wanted to vary the pace of deliveries but seeing the wicket helped, he was told by LSG skipper KL Rahul to bowl at full tilt.

He added his first wicket of Bairstow was was his favourite as it was difficult to return from injury that he suffered last season.

Yadav said that he had set his goal to debut at a young age but injuries were a setback.
