IPL 2024: Rohit Sharma urges Mumbai Indians crowd not to boo Hardik Pandya – WATCH

New Delhi: Rohit Sharma urged Mumbai Indians fans not to express their disapproval of new captain Hardik Pandya during their six-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2024.

Pandya agreed to a trade deal to move from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai and takeover as captain from Sharma. But under him, the five-time champions are winless so far and have suffered three successive losses to be rooted at the bottom of the 10-team standings.

It has only aggravated the hostile response towards Pandya, who came into spotlight during a six year spell at Mumbai from 2015 but was released as he joined Gujarat and led them to the title in 2022.

But returning to money in a big bucks deal hasn’t been well received by fans as he was booed by the crowd at Ahmedabad during Mumbai’s opening days loss to Gujarat in Ahmedabad on March 22.

On Monday, the jeering started even before the match, during the warm-up session and intensified during the toss, forcing former batter turned presenter Sanjay Manjrekar to urge the crowd to “behave”.

But it cut no ice with the spectators at the Wankhede Stadium as they booed roundly when Pandya came into bat at 20/4 in the third over.

Pandya made 21-ball 34 as Mumbai made only 125/9 and lost with 27 balls to spare. While fielding on the boundary line, Sharma was spotted gesturing towards the crowd, requesting the fans to calm down and make life easy for the under-pressure Pandya.

Mumbai are the only team without a win in the tournament so far after three rounds of matches. They have a six-day break before their next match on April 7 at home against Rishab Pant’s Delhi Capitals.
