IPL 2024: Trent Boult, Riyan Parag star as RR hammer MI by six wickets to bag 3rd win in a row

New Delhi: After Trent Boult wreaked havoc with the ball, Riyan Parag played a match-winning knock of unbeaten 54 to guide Rajasthan Royals (RR) to a thumping six-wicket win against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Monday, April 01. RR comfortably chased down the target of 126 runs with 27 balls to spare to bag their third win in a row in the tournament while MI slipped to their third consecutive defeat.

Mumbai Indians are yet to get off the mark in the tournament under their new captain Hardik Pandya, who has been facing the heat from all corners. Hardik was surprisingly booed at MI’s home ground on Monday as he continued to be on the receiving end of the fans’ wrath for taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma at the franchise.

It was far from an ideal welcome for the MI skipper, who was in for an even worse day on the field after losing the toss and being asked to bat first by RR captain Sanju Samson. MI got off to a horror start with the bat as Boult and Nandre Burger combined to decimate the order. Boult struck twice in the very first over as he dismissed Rohit Sharma and Naman Dheer on golden ducks in consecutive deliveries.

The left-arm pacer then returned to dismiss Ishan Kishan cheaply on just 16 off 14 balls in his next over while Burger got rid of impact-sub Dewald Brevis on a duck to reduce MI to tatters. Tilak Varma combined with skipper Hardik to stage a rescue act as the duo added 56 runs for the 5th wicket.

However, Hardik’s wicket in the 10th over once again turned the momentum in RR’s favour and there was no coming back for MI as they were restricted to 125/9 in 20 overs. Pandya top-scored with 34 off 21 balls while Tilak played a fighting knock of 29-ball 32.

They both were dismissed by the experienced Yuzvendra Chahal, who made light work of MI’s middle order after Boult and Burger’s destructive spell up top. While Boult finished with excellent figures of 3/22, Chahal took 3/11 in his 4 overs. Burger too managed 2 wickets while conceding only 32 runs off his four overs in what was a stellar effort from the RR bowlers.

Riyan Parag guides Rajasthan Royals home

After the terrific show from the bowlers, Rajasthan Royals were the favourites in the run-chase. However, the visitors faced several hiccups at the Wankhede Stadium as they lost early wickets to be 48/3 at one stage in the run-chase. However, Parag held his nerves under pressure and continued his fine form with the bat to produce a match-winning knock for his team.

Coming out to bat at no.4, Parag looked in no hurry as he settled down well before taking charge towards the end of his innings. He finished with 54 off 39 balls with the help of 5 fours and 3 sixes and played the situation well to take his team home comfortably in the end. Parag shared an unbeaten stand of 39 runs for the 5th wicket with Shubham Dubey, who made his debut for the Royals and remained unbeaten on 8 off 6 balls.

It was a great knock under pressure from Parag, who is finally coming good for RR this season after years of backing and is repaying the faith shown by the franchise. He clinched the Orange Cap with his unbeaten 54 as he now stands on top of the list of the highest run-getters in IPL 2024 so far with 181 runs from three matches.

MI remain winless in IPL 2024

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians continue to search for their first win of the season after facing defeats in all three matches in IPL 2024 so far. It has been a disastrous start for the five-time champions under skipper Hardik as they have failed to gain momentum and spark a turnaround. MI are yet to fire as a unit and will be looking to make amends when they lock horns with Delhi Capitals in their next game on April 07.
