Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue of the Congress party having ceded the Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka in 1974. The PM accused the Indira Gandhi government of ceding India’s territory to Sri Lanka. The island was given away to Sri Lanka as part of a maritime boundary agreement. On Monday External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also waded into the controversy, saying that former PM’s Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to give away the island to Sri Lanka, and considered it just a “little island” and a “little rock.”

The Opposition meanwhile jabbed the ruling party a 2015 RTI reply, which stated that the agreements in 1974 and 1976 did not involve either acquiring or ceding territory belonging to India, and asked whether the “change” in Modi government’s stance was for “election politics”.
