New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer Matheesha Pathirana pulled off a stunning one-handed flying catch to send a well-set David Warner packing during his side’s clash against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2024 on Sunday, March 31. Pathirana showcased amazing reflexes and incredible composure on the field to grab a stunner which left many in awe of his fielding.

The dismissal took place in the 10th over of DC’s innings after they opted to bat first in Vizag and got off to a brilliant start. Warner and his opening partner Prithvi Shaw were going all guns blazing when Pathirana produced a moment of magic to help fellow pacer Mustafizur Rahman draw the first blood for CSK in the game.

Mustafizur bowled a slower one at full length to Warner on the third ball of the tenth over and the DC batter played a reverse lap shot, trying to send it to the boundary rope. However, the ball was cut short in the air by Pathirana, who dived to his right to take one of the catches of the tournament so far. The right-arm pacer dived full stretch and the ball stuck in his hands as he grabbed a blinder.

While Pathirana was as composed as ever after taking the stunning catch, his teammates were ecstatic as his brilliant piece of fielding provided CSK with the first breakthrough in the game. The legendary MS Dhoni also had a big smile on his face as he applauded Pathirana’s excellent effort.

Warner, Shaw punish CSK bowlers

Before Pathirana produced a moment of magic on the field to shift the momentum in CSK’s favour, it was pure domination from DC openers Warner and Shaw in Vizag. The duo got the hosts off to a brilliant start with a 93-run stand for the first wicket. While Warner slammed 52 off just 35 balls studded with 5 fours and three sixes, Shaw notched up 43 off 27 balls in his first game of the season. Shaw’s 43 was laced with 4 fours and two sixes.

The duo set the stage for a big total for the Delhi Capitals with their brilliant partnership. However, Warner’s departure led to a shift in momentum as CSK bounced back into the contest. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Shaw soon after Warner’s dismissal before Pathirana struck twice in the 15th over to clean up Mitchell Marsh on 18 and Tristan Stubbs on a 2-ball duck to leave DC reeling on 134/4.
