New Delhi: On March 26, 2024, a commercial ship accidentally hit the historic Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore in the US. All the crew of the ship were Indians and searches are going on for some missing people. The commercial ship caused the accident after losing power. They issued a Mayday call before the accident, which gave the authorities ample time to limit the vehicle traffic on it. The issuance of Mayday has been appreciated by US President Joe Biden. The famous bridge had collapsed due to the hit. In this article, we will take a look at the infamous maritime accidents in recent times.

List of maritime accidents in recent times

The shipwreck with migrants

It took place on April 13, 2015, when a vessel with refugees and migrants heading to Europe sank within a day after leaving the Libyan coast. In the terrible disaster, around 400 people drowned, while the Italian Coast Guard rescued at least 144 people.

The shipwreck of 2013

On October 3, 2013, an unnamed vessel travelling from Libya with around 500 African migrants caught fire off Italy’s Lampedusa coast when the passengers set their blankets on fire to signal their proximity to land. About 359 people died in the accident.

MV Nyerere accident

On September 20, 2018, MV Nyerere, a ferry which was reportedly carrying more than 400 passengers, capsized in Lake Victoria. According to reports, 228 people died and 41 were rescued.

Senegal 2020

In 2020, a boat on its way to the Canary Islands caught fire and capsized off the coast of Senegal. The boat was carrying 200 migrants and more than 120 died in the accident.

Nigeria 2023

On June 12, 2023, a boat with wedding guests met with an accident on the Niger River in the Kwara State’s Pategi district. According to reports, at least 106 people died while over 100 people were rescued.

Calabria migrant boat accident

On 26 February 2023, a boat with hundreds of migrants sank after encountering harsh weather conditions while trying to land on Steccato di Cutro coast, a seaside resort village in Southern Italy’s Calabria. More than 94 people are believed to have died in the accident.

Adrianna accident

On June 14, 2023, a fishing boat with around 750 people, most of whom were migrants and refugees, sank in the Ionian Sea off the coast of Pylos in Greece. The Greek authorities launched a search and rescue effort and recovered 104 survivors and 82 bodies, the rest were presumed missing.
