WhatsApp is reportedly working on an AI-powered editing tool, which is said to let users modify an image’s background, restyle it, or expand it using AI. According to the report, the Meta-owned messaging app is also working to add Meta AI to the service, allowing users to ask questions to the chatbot directly from the search bar. Let’s get into the details.

WhatsApp: AI-powered image editing tool

According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the messaging is developing an AI-powered image editor in the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.13. This means the feature is not ready for testing yet. However, it is expected to arrive soon for beta users. WABetaInfo spotted the feature in the app’s code and shared a screenshot, revealing how it would work.

While sending images in a chat, WhatsApp will show a new green-coloured icon next to the HD button at the top. As per the screenshot, tapping the button will display three options– Backdrop, Restyle, and Expand. Since the feature is still being developed, it is not clear how each of these options will affect the image. However, judging by their name, the Backdrop could allow you to change the background, Restyle could allow you to switch the style of the picture, and Expand could allow you to stretch the picture with an AI-powered auto-fill feature.

Meta AI in WhatsApp

WABetaInfo reported another feature under development, called “Ask Meta AI”, in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.7.14. The publication shared a screenshot of the feature, showcasing Ask Meta AI popping up for use while using the search option of the app. Meta AI is the company’s generative AI assistant for Meta products designed to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
