Microsoft has named Pavan Davuluri, a company veteran and an alumnus of the IIT-Madras, as its new Windows and Surface chief. Davuluri was leading the Surface silicon and devices team and Mikhail Parakhin was heading the Windows and web experiences after Pranos Panay’s departure to Amazon last year. However, since Parakhin has “decided to explore new roles”, Microsoft is bringing both teams (Windows + Devices) together under the leadership of Davuluri.

Who is Pavan Davuluri?

Pavan Davuluri graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and pursued a Master of Science degree at the University of Maryland in the United States. He started his career with Microsoft in 2001 as a Reliability Component Manager and has been a part of the company ever since, completing over 23 years with the software giant in various roles and responsibilities.

Prior to his role as Corporate Vice President, of Windows + Devices, Davuluri served as Corporate Vice President, Windows Silicon and Systems Integration. After his promotion, Davuluri will continue to report to Microsoft’s head of experience and devices, Rajesh Jha.

New Windows organisation at Microsoft

With the announcement of Davuluri leading the Windows + Devices at Microsoft, the company is bringing the two teams together once again. The Verge obtained an internal memo from Rajesh Jha, outlining the new Windows organisation. He explained that bringing the two teams together would allow them to adopt a holistic approach to building silicon, systems, experiences, and devices spanning Windows client and cloud for the AI era. Rajesh Jha explained the new roles and reporting in the memo, which is as follows:

Pavan Davuluri will lead the Windows Experiences and Windows + Devices teams and continue to report to Jha
Shilpa Ranganathan and Jeff Johnson and their teams will report directly to Davuluri
Mikhail Parakhin will report to Kevin Scott while supporting the WWE transition
Jordi Ribas will lead Search, Maps, and Platforms with Andrey Proskurin, Fatima Kardar, and Nick Lee reporting to him
Rukmini Iyer will lead Advertising with Paul Viola and Weiqing Tu reporting to her
Mike Davidson will continue to lead Design and will work with Davuluri and the team on how to realign Windows design

Notably, The Windows team at Microsoft will continue to work with the Microsoft AI team on AI, silicon, and experiences, while the Web Experiences team will report to Mustafa Suleyman in the new Microsoft AI organisation. The former DeepMind co-founder (Suleyman) was recently hired as the head of Microsoft AI. Ali Akgun, Kya Sainsbury-Carter, Qi Zhang, and Rajesh Sundaram’s roles remain unchanged, and they will join the Microsoft AI leadership team along with Jordi, Mike, and Rukmini, all reporting to Mustafa.
