MS Dhoni keeps his 10-year-old promise with fireworks against Delhi Capitals

New Delhi: Mahendra Singh Dhoni dished out a hammering to Delhi Capitals bowlers on Sunday (March 31) but for the fans in Visakhapatnam and millions glued to the TV/Mobile screens, it was pure entertainment. Dhoni rolled back the years with a 16-ball 37-run knock against the Capitals in Match 13 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Dhon’s quickfire cameo, which included three maximums and four boundaries, couldn’t help Chennai Super Kings (CSK) achieve the 192-run target set by the home side. It could have been different had Dhoni promoted himself up the order. The run/ball equation became almost impossible when the former CSK captain came out to bat at N0.8. But while Dhoni couldn’t save CSK from tasting their first defeat of the season, he kept his 10-year-old promise with his blazing cameo.

Back in 2014, Dhoni had tweeted: “Doesn’t matter which team wins, I’m here for entertainment.” After entertaining the Vizag crowd on Sunday, Dhoni’s old tweet has resurfaced on social media.

Will Dhoni promote himself in the coming matches?

After Dhoni relinquished captaincy on the eve of IPL 2023, it was clear that he would play in a limited capacity. Dhoni’s decision to quit the leadership role also gave a clear indication that the former India captain is not fully fit following a knee surgery that he underwent after guiding CSK to title triumph in IPL 2023.

But he has been agile behind the stumps in the first three matches this season and his fireworks with the bat on Sunday showcased that he is not rusty with the bat in hand.

Against Delhi, the required run rate was almost out of reach when Dhoni walked out to bat. It became clear on Sunday that CSK will need Dhoni’s batting prowess in future games.

Former Australia skipper Michael Clarke hailed Dhoni’s hitting ability and said that CSK will need their talisman to succeed.

“He’s going to be needed, there’s no doubt about it, throughout this tournament and probably needed when they’re under maximum pressure”, said Clarke on a Star Sports show.

Dhoni’s brief stay at the crease demonstrated his power and timing, but more importantly, he hasn’t lost the Midas touch.
