Most powerful earthquake in over 2 decades

The most powerful earthquake in 25 years struck during the morning rush hour, claiming nine lives and trapping miners. It caused residents to flee damaged buildings and led to severe tilting or crushing of structures in the mountainous Hualien County, where the epicenter was located. In Taipei, over 150 km away, older buildings shed tiles, prompting schools to evacuate students to sports fields equipped with yellow safety helmets.

This formidable earthquake, described as the strongest in a quarter-century, struck the coast of Taiwan early Wednesday, triggering alarms throughout the region, including a tsunami warning for Japan’s Okinawa. The seismic event rocked the entire island of Taiwan, resulting in building collapses and strong tremors felt in the capital, Taipei.
