‘Preity Zinta made Parathas for us’: Former Punjab batter recalls his IPL journey

New Delhi: Hundreds of cricketers both foreigners and Indians have made memories with the Indian Premier League (IPL) since the inception of the lucrative league in 2008. Ravi Bopara is one of them. The former English all-rounder was associated with the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab) franchise in the initial years of IPL. Bopara scored 333 runs in 15 matches for the Mohali-based franchise across two seasons. His second stint in IPL was with the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016.

In a show named ‘The Super Over’ on Fancode, Boprara recalled his IPL journey with the Punjab side when the tournament was staged in South Africa. Bopara revealed the standout moment of IPL 2009.

“The standout moment apart from winning, and getting my highest score, was when Preity Zinta cooked parathas for me. She made them with her own hands. When she asked me what I wanted for breakfast, I mentioned aloo parathas, and she graciously made them herself. I am forever thankful for that gesture.”

Bopara’s highest score in the IPL came in the 2009 season. The stylish batter played a superb knock of 84 opening the batting to guide his team to a seven-wicket win in Durban. Punjab finished the season in the fifth spot with seven wins and as many losses.

Bumrah is the greatest

The former Punjab star hailed India and Mumbai Indians bowling superstar Jasprit Bumrah for high praise. Bopara said that Bumrah is amongst the best T20 fast bowlers in the world, and is primed to finish his career as the greatest of all time in the shortest format of the game.

Bopara’s former franchise is now called Punjab Kings. PBKS started the IPL 2024 campaign with a comfortable win against Delhi Capitals but stumbled to a four-wicket defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Monday, March 25. The Mohali-based side’s next match is away in Lucknow against KL Rahul’s Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on March 30, Saturday.
