New Delhi: Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, emphasised the urgent need for United Nations reforms and endorsed India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Alipov highlighted India’s potential to bring balance to global interests, particularly those of the Global South.
“We are of the view that India as a permanent member of the Security Council could make a significant contribution to promoting balance as well as an agenda focused on the interests of the world majority, primarily the countries of the Global South,” the Russian envoy said.
Alipov praised India’s successful non-permanent UNSC membership
In an interview with RT news agency, Alipov praised India’s successful non-permanent UNSC membership and leadership, along with their diplomatic prowess during the G20 presidency. He criticised the existing Western dominance in the Security Council and questioned the promotion of new Western candidates.
“We have repeatedly indicated our support for New Delhi’s candidacy. Our Indian partners have proven themselves worthy during their non-permanent membership in the UNSC in 2021-2022 and have successfully led the Council twice. Their G20 presidency was also a clear confirmation of their high professionalism in multilateral diplomacy and the ability to find consensus amid growing geopolitical tensions,” the Russian envoy added.
Alipov backed permanent seat at UNSC for “deserving contenders”
Alipov stressed the importance of aligning the Security Council composition with modern realities, supporting India and other deserving contenders from Asia, Africa and Latin America for permanent membership. He called for the broadest consensus on this issue.
“At the same time, it is widely recognized that bringing the composition of the UN Security Council into line with modern realities, bearing in mind the well-founded aspirations of India and other reputable contenders from Asia, Africa and Latin America for permanent membership, is long overdue. In this respect we value the broadest possible consensus,” the Russian ambassador to India said.
Alipov lauded unprecedented trade ties, economic relations between Russia and India
The ambassador lauded the unprecedented trade ties and economic relations between Russia and India, highlighting Russia’s significant role as a major trading partner. He emphasised the growth in various sectors like hydrocarbons, mineral fertilizers, agriculture, and diamonds, fostering mutual trust and cooperation.
The strategic partnership between India and Russia, deeply rooted in historical connections and shared interests, includes extensive defence collaboration and joint military exercises. Energy cooperation, particularly in nuclear technology through projects like the Kudankulam nuclear power plant, signifies a vital aspect of their relationship.
Despite facing criticism for importing Russian oil amid geopolitical tensions, India remains committed to strengthening ties with Russia for mutual benefit. The call for UN reforms and India’s permanent Security Council membership underscores the shared vision of both nations for a more inclusive and balanced global governance structure.
