Erode: Erode, one of the newly formed Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu, is set to witness a three-cornered fight between the Dravidian majors AIADMK- DMK and BJP for the first time.

Erode LS candidates 2024

The ruling DMK has fielded KE Prakash(48), the deputy secretary of DMK’s youth wing and importantly a close aide of Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president MK Stalin.

On the other hand, the AIADMK has fielded Aatral Ashok Kumar (54), the state’s richest candidate, who quit the BJP and joined AIADMK in November 2023. He is also new to electoral politics but is again a familiar face due to his social service.

Similarly, the NDA ally TMC fielded P Vijayakumar (56), a first-time contestant who is also an environmental activist and the party’s district president.

Eorde dominated by Kongu Vellalar community voters

Since Erode has the largest number of voters of the Kongu Vellalar community comes under other Backward Class (OBC), followed by Mudaliyar and Adi Dravidar communities, so political parties always give tickets to those from these communities. This time, all three major parties DMK, AIADMK, and Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) in the BJP alliance are fielding candidates who belong to the Kongu Vellalar community.

So far Erode which is in the Kongu belt has polled only in 3 elections after it was elevated to the Lok Sabha constituency in 2008.

MDMK won twice out of 3 general elections held in Erode

The constituency faced the general election for the first time in 2019. In the last 2019 elections, MDMK’s Ganesh Murthy won in the DMK alliance and became an MP. He contested in the rising sun symbol. In this election, Ganesamoorthy won by a margin of 2,10,618 votes against AIADMK candidate Manimaran. Surprisingly, actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam came in 3rd spot in this election. Saravanakumar who contested on behalf of MNM got 47,719 votes or 4.47 % of votes.

MDMK Ganesamurthy who was elected from the constituency from the constituency twice, was allegedly expected that he will be fielded for the third time. But he attempted suicide by consuming pesticide and died without responding to the treatment at a private hospital in Coimbatore city a few days ago. He took the extreme step allegedly after the MDMK party denied him a ticket to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

DMK hopes that Ganeshamurthy’s reputation will help their candidate’s victory.
