‘The best finisher I’ve ever seen’: Australia legend hails MS Dhoni after his heroics against DC in IPL 2024

New Delhi: Australia legend Michael Clarke was left in awe after witnessing MS Dhoi’s batting heroics against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Sunday, March 31. A vintage Dhoni was on display in Vizag as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) legend turned back the clock in style with a sensational cameo against DC, albeit in a losing cause. Dhoni’s batting heroics went in vain as CSK lost the game by 20 runs after falling short in the 192-run chase.

With 72 runs required off 23 balls, the equation was in Delhi Capitals’ favour when Dhoni arrived to bat at number 8 for CSK in their run-chase on Sunday. However, there were no signs of rustiness despite the former CSK skipper not having played a competitive game in over 300 days as he got off the mark in style with a boundary against Khaleel Ahmed and raced to 9 runs off just 3 balls.

There was no stopping from there as Dhoni smashed three sixes and slammed 4 fours en route to his unbeaten 37 off 16 balls and lit up the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Stadium with his fireworks off the bat. Though CSK eventually fell short and ended up suffering a 20-run defeat after managing only 171/6 in 20 overs, Dhoni’s batting heroics gave the fans enough to cheer for as the 42-year-old once again showcased his finishing prowess.

Speaking on Star Sports, former Australia captain Clarke lavished praise on Dhoni and called him the best finisher he has ever seen. However, Clarke insisted Dhoni won’t be coming up the order anytime soon for CSK just because he is hitting the ball well. He believes Dhoni won’t promote himself up the order unless there is a game on the line.

“I don’t think he’ll come up the order. I think if there’s a game on the line and he needs to go up the order because it’s what’s best for the team, I’m sure he will. But I think just because he’s hitting the ball so well, I don’t think you’ll see him batting in the top five or top six. I think he’s a genius at the dance,” Clarke said on Star Sports.

“He’s probably the best finisher I’ve ever seen. So, I think they’ll continue to utilize him in that role,” he added.

CSK suffer 1st defeat of the season

Dhoni’s 16-ball 37 went in vain as Chennai Super Kings slipped to their first defeat in IPL 2024 after failing to chase down the target of 192 runs in 20 overs. CSK were left with 4 wickets and batted all 20 overs but still couldn’t get over the line after a terrible top-order collapse. While skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was dismissed on just 1 in the very first over, his opener partner Rachin Ravindra could only score 2 of 12 as CSK were reduced to 7/2 early in the run-chase.

They never quite managed to recover despite Ajinkya Rahane’s 30-ball 45 and Daryl Mitchell’s cameo of 34 runs off 26 balls as the duo added 68 runs for the third wicket. CSK didn’t manage to gain momentum in the chase and eventually ended up falling short by a significant margin.
