Dehradun: BJP’s Uttarakhand unit has blamed the main opposition Congress party for spreading rumors about the centre’s Agniveer scheme. Congress has been continuously targeting the BJP during its election campaigning across the state over the Agniveer scheme. Uttarakhand sends many youths to join the armed forces and thus, Congress is trying to develop the centre’s Agniveer scheme as a potential issue against the BJP.

Congress never ensured proper respect for the martyr’s bodies during its long rule at the centre

“It is the same Congress which never ensured proper respect for the bodies of martyrs during its tenure at the centre. The Congress is now spreading rumours about the Agniveer scheme. The Congress has no moral right to speak on Agniveer scheme,” spokesperson of the BJP’s state unit Suresh Joshi told reporters at a press conference held at the media centre in Dehradun on Friday afternoon.

He said BJP has always ensured proper respect for the army-men in the state. He highlighted the selection of Major General (retd) BC Khanduri for the post of Chief Minister in the past. “Our chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is also a son of a former army-man. Dhami is spending his total energy for the development of the state,” Joshi said.

No infrastructural development in border areas during Congress’ rule

Targeting the Congress party, Joshi said the Congress party never developed infrastructure in the border areas during its long rule at the centre. The army was never equipped with modern weapons or other required facilities during the long tenure of the Congress party. He recalled the tradition started during the tenure of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to send the martyrs’ bodies to their ancestral places with proper respect at the time of Kargil war. The then BJP government at the centre, headed by PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, also provided proper financial help to the affected families. He also added that the Modi government has implemented One Rank One Pension Scheme (OROP) for the army-men.

Centre implemented Agniveer scheme after consulting army officials and defense experts

He said the Agniveer scheme has been implemented after consulting the army officers and defense experts. He said this scheme has given more opportunities for the youths to get jobs in the Army. After serving the Army for four years, these youths will have fresh opportunities to serve the government organizations, semi-government organizations, Central Para Military Forces and Corporate groups.
