His dedication to public service and his pivotal role in shaping modern India has left an indelible mark on our history. I am proud to have got the opportunity to work with him very closely over the last several decades.”

Earlier in the day, President Droupadi Murmu arrived at Advani’s residence to confer him with Bharat Ratna due to Advani’s ill health. Among those who were also present on the occasion were Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, and others.

Announcing the same, President Droupadi’s office said on X, “As a parliamentarian, his belief in dialogue enriched parliamentary traditions. As Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, he always placed national interest above all else, earning him respect and admiration across party lines. His long and tireless struggle for the cultural resurgence of India culminated in the reconstruction of Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya in 2024.”

“He is one of the few political leaders since independence who succeeded in reshaping national priorities and taking the country forward on the path of development. His achievements provide the best expression of India’s innate talent and inclusive traditions,” the statement added.

Earlier on Saturday, President Murmu conferred Bharat Ratna to four other stalwarts of the country. Among them included former Prime Ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, and two-time former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, posthumously in the national capital. They were represented by their family members at the ceremony.
