New Delhi: Two journalists, one belonging to a noted news agency while the other was a cameraman, were manhandled and physically assaulted by farmers at the Shambhu border on Wednesday. The shocking incident took place as hundreds of farmers from Punjab are camping at the Singhu, Tikri and Shambhu borders outside Delhi as they are not being allowed to enter the national capital. The farmers have been protesting against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Centre to press for their demands, including a legal guarantee to MSP for all crops, loan waiver, and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission.

How journalists were manhandled

News9Live learnt from those present at the spot that two journalists, including a cameraman and a reporter of the news agency ANI, were brutally thrashed by farmers at the Shambhu border. News9Live couldn’t verify the video independently and does not vouch for its authenticity.

The witnesses told News9live that the minor dispute snowballed into a major one as the farmers mistook the reporters as paramilitary forces personnel. “The reporters were wearing bullet-proof jackets with ‘MEDIA’ written on them. However, the farmers thought that the two men were associated with some central paramilitary forces. Therefore, the farmers assaulted the two journalists,” they said.

Victims undergoing treatment at a hospital

Minutes after the incident took place, several other journalists and farmers’ leaders intervened and stopped the group of people from thrashing the victims. The two journalists, who suffered critical injuries, were taken to a hospital. Both the injured victims were currently undergoing treatment.

On January 26, 2021, at least four reporters of Indian media group iTV were beaten and heckled by unidentified assailants during the tractor rally in the national capital. The reporters, who faced the brutality, were identified as Aishwarya Jain, Ajit Shrivastava, Priya Singh and Aditya Nair.
