WhatsApp is reportedly working to enable international payments via UPI (Unified Payments Interface). According to tipster @AssembleDebug on X (formerly Twitter), the Meta-owned messaging service will soon add international payments with a limit of up to three months. The feature seems to be under development and not available to even beta testers. The tipster added screenshots of the new feature but did not reveal which beta version added it.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) developed UPI in 2016 to facilitate peer-to-peer (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. WhatsApp started testing the UPI feature with over 1 million users in 2018 and got approval from NPCI after two years.

Starting in November 2020, WhatsApp rolled out an in-app UPI service to all Indian users, allowing them to send and receive money right from the chat. The app seems to be taking the next step as it plans to add international UPI payments. Notably, other payment services like Google Pay and PhonePe already allow international UPI service.

According to the screenshot shared by the tipster, the new option will be visible in the Payments menu below the ‘Forgot UPI PIN’ option. The feature is labelled ‘International payments’ and when clicked, opens a separate screen allowing users to choose the start and end dates for the feature before turning it on.

This is currently not available for users. But WhatsApp might be working on it as I couldn’t find anything on Google about it.

Notably, users will need to enter their UPI PIN to start the service. It will allow them to send money to businesses in supported countries. The screenshot suggests that WhatsApp will also users to click on a link to see the entire list of supported countries.

The international UPI service automatically expires, prompting users to activate it again when required. While Google Pay offers a transaction period of seven days, WhatsApp will allow users to fix a period of up to three months.
