Mumbai: The festival of Baisakhi is considered to be the most important in Sikhism. In the first month of the Vikram Samvat, when the sun enters the Aries zodiac sign, Baisakhi is celebrated. The festival is also known as Mesha Sankranti for this reason.

Baisakhi 2024 Date

Baisakhi will be celebrated on April 13, 2024, this year. On Baisakhi day, Poila Boishakh in Bengal, Sattu’an in Bihar, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Vishu in Kerala, and Bihu in Assam are also celebrated.

Significance of Baisakhi

This day marks the ripening of the Rabi crops, and people offer prayers to the Lord and thank him for a successful harvest. For blessings of a good harvest in the next harvest, the first portion of the Rabi crop is offered to the Fire God. The prepared food is then consumed by the general public.

Apart from celebrating a good harvest, the reason behind observing Baisakhi is also the establishment of the Khalsa Panth by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, in 1699.

How is Baisakhi Celebrated

Farmers celebrate Baisakhi by worshipping nature and the divine, expressing gratitude, and performing Bhangra dances. They visit Gurudwaras, recite Guru Granth Sahib, sing hymns, and make donations. The scriptures mention that taking a dip in the Ganges on Baisakhi is equivalent to performing the Ashvamedha Yajna. Worshipping the Sun on this day, as it enters Aries, the first zodiac sign, is believed to bring success throughout the year.
