Posted by Kolkata: In a case of kidnapping reported from South Kolkata, a businessman’s family received a ransom call of Rs 1 crore. The man has been missing since April 5. The victim went out of the house for some errands when he was allegedly kidnapped, according to the police officials investigating the case.
Business dispute might have led to kidnapping: Police
Police officials investigating the case suspect that a business dispute led to the kidnapping. Investigations revealed that the man was taken around the state and hidden at different locations. His kidnappers then took him to other states too, to escape being detected by police. Initially he was hidden in north Bengal, said police officials.
The police have decided to form a special team to investigate the case. This is so because the case needs thorough investigation and also coordination with police from other states.
Meanwhile the family is really worried for the safety of the man. They have allegedly been threatened by the kidnappers and have been asked not to involve the police. The kidnappers have threatened to kill the man, if the family approaches the police. Initially the family members gave in to their demand and had filed no complaint. But they gradually realised that the criminals were not ready to negotiate and then approached the police. The complaint was filed at Karaya Police station in the city.
The police filed a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. The kidnappers have been booked under Section 365 (kidnapping), Section 387 (extortion), Section 368 (wrongful confinement) and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy). All these are non-bailable sections, said officIALS.
Now the police are tracking the CCTV footage of the area from where the businessman went missing. They are also trying to locate the mobile phone used to make the ransom call to the family. Technical teams have been activated to locate the businessman and police are hoping for a breakthrough soon in the case.
