Sekhmet Bar roof collapse in Chennai: Police registers case against owner

Chennai: The city’s Abiramapuram police have registered a case of death caused by negligence (U/S 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in which three workers were buried alive under the debris at the Sekhmet club reported on Thursday evening. Meanwhile, the police team has been inquiring about 12 staff members of Sekhmet in connection with the accident.

3 migrant workers killed in the incident

Three migrant workers were killed, and a few other people sustained minor injuries after a portion of the roof on the first floor of the Sekhmet Club, an up-market pub in Alwarpet, collapsed on Thursday evening.
The accident was reported around 7.15 pm. The witnesses said that the portion of the first floor on the north end closer to Chamiers Road collapsed when the workers were busy preparing for their guests.

Initial police probe revealed that about 17 workers and three guests were inside the pub when the accident took place around 7.15 pm.Three guests and 14 other staff members escaped unhurt, and they were evacuated from the spot immediately.

CMRL issue clarification

Meanwhile, the Chennai Metro Rail Work (CMRL) issued a clarification saying that phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Work was not the cause of the collapse in Sekhmet Club.
