New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested three accused, including an inspector of Haryana Police posted in Yamunanagar, allegedly for taking Rs 5 lakh bribe. The district police department has initiated the process to put inspector Balwant Singh under suspension, a Times of India report said.

On April 23, the CBI arrested Balwant Singh, SHO of cyber crime police station in Yamunanagar district, along with two persons while accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from the complainant Sukhjit Singh of Manimajra, Chandigarh.

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of CBI at Chandigarh have registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act against Balwant Singh and the other two. The inspector allegedly threatened Sukhjit and demanded Rs 40 lakh from him for not framing him in a case which was under probe. After some negotiations, the accused accepted Rs 5 lakh as bribe, but the complainant approached the ACB, CBI in Chandigarh with a complaint, the report added.

‘He demanded Rs 40 lakh as bribe’

Sukhjit said in his complaint that he had a jewellery shop in Chandigarh. Inspector Balwant Singh along with another person came to his shop and after some enquiries, tried to frame him in a bogus case even though he showed him the relevant documents, the complainant said. Sukhjit alleged that the inspector intimidated and warned him. “Inspector Balwant told me that only he can give relief to him from the said trouble, however I would have to pay him a bribe of Rs 40 lakh,” alleged Sukhjit.

After Sukhjit approached the CBI, its sleuths laid a trap and nabbed two accused as they were demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5 lakh on behalf of the accused inspector. Balwant Singh was also caught later. The CBI also carried out searches at residential and office premises of all the accused and seized key documents.
