New Delhi: An Indian’s heart is now beating for a Pakistani teen Ayesha Rashan, who underwent a successful heart transplant surgery at Chennai’s MGM Healthcare. Ayesha, who is 19, got a new life because of the Indian donor and the successful operation performed by surgeons at Chennai’s MGM Healthcare. And what’s more, the procedure was carried out free of cost, courtesy the city-based Aishwaryan Trust, an NDTV report said.

Ayesha, who hails from Karachi, wishes to pursue fashion designing. Ayesha’s family couldn’t have afforded the surgery if the trust and the Chennai doctors hadn’t come to their aid. Ayesha said she felt “good after the transplant.” She is in a stable condition and can go back to Pakistan. Her mother showered praises on the doctors, the hospital, and the medical trust and thanked them all for everything.

The doctors said Ayesha was admitted to the hospital with severe heart dysfunction. After heart failure, the doctors had to put her on ECMO. ECMO is a kind of life support for those suffering from life-threatening illness or injury affecting the heart or lungs function. After this, her heart pump developed a leak in a valve, which required a full heart transplant, the report pointed out.

Donor heart came from Delhi

Such heart transplant cost more than Rs 35 lakh. This cost was covered by the doctors and the trust in Ayesha’s operation. The donor heart came from Delhi, the young girl was lucky, said Dr KR Balakrishnan, Director (Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant), and Dr Suresh Rao (Co-Director (Institute of Heart and Lung Transplant).

Ayesha got the heart fast because there were no competing claims as otherwise a foreigner can’t get an organ in India, they were quoted as saying by NDTV. “She is like our daughter… every life matters,” the doctors said.
