Lok Sabha Elections 2024: First phase records 60.03% turnout; Tripura witnesses highest among states

New Delhi: The first phase of Lok Sabha polls ended this evening with an aggregate 60.03 voter turnout recorded till 7 pm on Friday, the Election Commission said. The polling took place across across 21 states and Union Territories in 102 constituencies. While votings were held amid tight security, a total of nine Union ministers, two former chief ministers and former governor were in the fray. There were over 1,600 candidates in the first phase.

According to the Election Commission, while the voting ended at 6 pm, some voters, who were standing in queues, were also allowed to caste their votes. Among states, Tripura recorded the highest number of voter turnout with 80.17 percent, while Bihar recorded lowest with 48.50 percent, the Election Commission said.

Total number of seats which went to polls in first phase

Among states and Union Territories, polling in all 39 seats were held in Tamil Nadu. A total of five seats went to polls in Uttarakhand, while polling in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh were held in two seats each. Apart from them, votings were held also held in 12 seats of Rajasthan, six in Madhya Pradesh, eight in Uttar Pradesh, five seats in Assam and Maharashtra each, three in West Bengal, four in Bihar, one seat each in Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh and Tripura and two in Manipur. Polling were also conducted in one seats each in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mizoram, Nagaland, Puducherry, Sikkim and Lakshadweep.

Violence reported in West Bengal

While West Bengal reported over 77 percent of polls, there were reports of clashed between BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in Cooch Behar.
