Posted by New Delhi: In yet another case of cyber fraud reported in India, a 27-year-old man was arrested by the Delhi Police on Friday. He allegedly cheated a man from Delhi of Rs 5.5 lakh by posing as a customer care executive of an airline.
Fraud through OTP, says police
According to the police the accused, Gourab Dey was arrested from Kolkata. Describing how exactly the fraud happened, officials said that Durga Nath Raina from Delhi wanted to book a flight ticket and for that he wanted to contact the customer care of a particular airline. He googled the number of the airline.
Just a while after having searched for the number online, Raina received a call. The caller at the other end identified himself as the customer representative of an airline. He told Raina to download an app and to share an OTP received on his registered mobile number.
The unsuspecting Raina did as instructed. But as soon as he had shared the OTP with the caller, he lost Rs 5.50 lakh from his bank account.
After having been defrauded of his hard-earned money, Raina approached the Cyber cell of Dwarka police station. An FIR was registered and a probe launched immediately, said the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Ankit Singh.
The police found the caller was from Kolkata. Through his number his bank account was traced and the money was seen to be parked in the account. A raid was carried out and Dey was arrested. Upon interrogation, the man revealed that he had hatched a plan with his friends to get easy money. The others involved in the cyber fraud with him were identified as Abhishek Yadav, Rahul Ram and Sahabaj Koyal.
The gang allegedly used to trick people into sharing their bank account details. These were then shared with another person named, Badshah who withdrew the cash from the ATM and then the money was shared among all members of the gang. The police are now trying to catch the members of the gang and are also trying to find out how many people did the gang dupe.
